Challenge
THAR had a healthy business and a growing customer base. The platform was the thing holding it back. After 8 years of extensions, new features broke old ones, and the same flow lived in several places at once. The original developers were no longer available.
Main challenges:
- A codebase that could not be changed safely
- 100,000+ users and 860 active courses that could not be interrupted
- Compliance training: learner progress and certificates are legally meaningful
- All data had to stay in Europe
- A live AFAS integration that customers used every day

Solution
We started by assessing the legacy application and creating a migration roadmap. We mapped the database and documented every workflow and integration before anyone wrote code.
Then we redesigned the front end on a new design system. We moved the backend logic and the whole database onto EU-hosted infrastructure. We rebuilt the integrations so the partners on the other side had nothing to change.
We focused on:
- A front end rebuilt on a new design system, keeping the page structure staff already knew
- The backend logic and the full database moved onto EU-hosted infrastructure
- The AFAS integration rebuilt, so user and certificate data stays in one place
- Whitelabel branding per customer organisation, down to transactional email
- A staged release plan, agreed with the client before launch

Results
THAR went live on the new platform on 5 May 2026, roughly six months after design kickoff. The data migration surfaced inaccuracies and incomplete transfers, and the team worked through them in the two weeks following launch. The outcome is a platform THAR's own team can change: the founder files tickets directly, product work has restarted, and THAR extended the engagement into a full revamp of its marketing website.
Impact:
- Live in May 2026, six and a half months after design kickoff
- Product work restarted after roughly three years without major features
- AFAS sync runs every 30 minutes, removing double administration
- Engagement extended into a revamp of the marketing website
